Why Families Resist in Good Times or Bad
Welcome back to the Life Balance Advantage—where we explore how to wake up from the sleepwalk of unconscious living and reclaim your health, joy, and purpose.
Today’s episode is titled: “Watch Out for the Pushback: Families Resist in Good Times or Bad.”
I’m Mark Armiento, and in this fourth podcast of our five-part family dynamics series, we’re exploring a powerful—and often invisible—force:
Why families resist your growth, even when that growth is good.
Whether you’re healing from past trauma, making healthier choices, or breaking the cycle of stress and self-medication, here’s the truth:
When you change, it affects everyone. And not everyone is ready.
5 Core Beliefs in Unhealthy Family Dances
Unhealthy families often revolve around patterns of self-medication, toxic habits, or emotional suppression. Here are five core beliefs that fuel resistance to change:
- Negative behaviors shape relationships.
Addictions and coping mechanisms don’t just affect one person—they shape the emotional rhythm of the entire family. - Introducing healthy habits can destabilize the system.
A positive shift may feel threatening to a family that’s used to dysfunction. - “Problem” members are often scapegoats.
If one person heals, another may unconsciously take on the role of the “identified problem” to maintain the status quo. - The toxic voice inside promotes self-sabotage.
We all carry an inner critic or saboteur. Unhealthy families may amplify this. - There is an inner war between self-harm and self-care.
The tug-of-war between who we’ve been and who we want to be is especially difficult in close relationships.
Why Stress Demands Balance
If you’re wondering why all this matters, just look at the numbers:
- 75% of adults report moderate to high levels of stress
- 80% of workers say they feel stress at work—half say they need help managing it
- 32% of children are overweight or obese, often linked to unmanaged family stress
- 75% of people with depression receive no effective treatment
The takeaway?
Stress is silently killing our health, relationships, and joy.
That’s why waking up and pursuing balance is so essential.
The Four Life Balance Advantage Truths
At the heart of my work are four essential truths I call the Life Balance Advantage (LBA) pillars:
- Stress is harming your mind, body, and spirit.
Chronic stress quietly depletes every part of your being. - Self-awareness is the key to healing.
Without insight into your behaviors, beliefs, and patterns, no lasting change is possible. - Balance requires skill, not just intention.
It’s not enough to want change—you need the right tools to implement it. - Adversity is a disguised blessing.
The breakdown often comes before the breakthrough.
Why Families Push Back When You Grow
Even as you start to change positively—by eating better, saying “no” to toxicity, or choosing peace over chaos—your loved ones may resist.
It’s not always malicious.
Sometimes, you becoming healthier exposes where others are still stuck.
“Why won’t you have a drink with us anymore?”
“You used to be so fun.”
“You’ve changed.”
Yes, you have. And that’s the point.
But it may feel threatening to those who relied on your old patterns.
Mistaken Beliefs That Block Change
Here are five common beliefs that keep people stuck:
- “Stress doesn’t affect me.”
- “Mind, body, and spirit aren’t connected.”
- “There’s nothing stopping me from changing.”
- “I have to be perfect before I start.”
- “I’ll do it when I feel like it.”
Let me be clear:
You don’t need perfection. You need momentum.
This Week’s Life Balance Action Step
Let’s not just reflect—let’s act.
- Choose one domain (physical, mental, emotional, relational, or spiritual) where you’re losing the most energy.
- Set one SMART goal:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Relevant
- Trackable
Even a small step begins the journey.
What If…?
Close your eyes for a moment and ask:
- What if I could manifest the life I long for?
- What if I stopped listening to fear and followed my truth?
- What if I found joy in balance?
- What if I stopped waiting… and just started?
You can.
And when you do, the happiness you deserve will find you.
