Are You Sleepwalking Through Life?

What if the stress, confusion, or dissatisfaction you’re experiencing is the result of living in a dreamlike fog—a place where you’re technically awake but not truly conscious of your choices or their impact? In my decades of clinical and sports psychology work, I’ve found that many individuals are doing just that: sleepwalking through life, unaware of the imbalance that’s quietly shaping their mind, body, and spirit.

This insight is what inspired my new book, Sleepwalking on a Tightrope. In this post, I want to share core concepts from the book and give you actionable ways to begin awakening, reclaiming your energy, and creating a life filled with balance, purpose, and joy.


Why “Sleepwalking on a Tightrope”?

The title came from a dual realization:

  1. Sleepwalking symbolizes the lack of awareness I see all too often. Just like my brother who roamed the house at night unaware, many of us drift through life unconscious of our actions, reactions, and emotional states.
  2. On a Tightrope speaks to the fragile, delicate nature of life balance. Navigating life without awareness is like trying to walk a tightrope blindfolded—eventually, you’re going to fall.

If you feel like you’re repeating the same mistakes, feeling persistently overwhelmed, or experiencing emotional or physical symptoms, you may be in this very state of sleepwalking. But the good news is, there’s a path forward.


Four Stages of Awakening

To transition from sleepwalking to intentional living, we must pass through four key stages:

  1. Unconsciously Unaware: You don’t know what you don’t know. Blind spots dominate.
  2. Consciously Unaware: You know something is wrong but aren’t sure how to fix it.
  3. Consciously Aware: You start recognizing your patterns and take action to shift them.
  4. Unconsciously Aware: Healthy, balanced choices become second nature.

Most people I work with find themselves stuck in the second stage. The wake-up call often comes through adversity—illness, relationship issues, or a breakdown of mental or emotional health. But adversity can be the universe’s way of nudging us toward transformation.


The Life Balance Advantage: 5 Steps to Healing and Harmony

Once you’re awake, the next question is: How do you stay balanced on life’s tightrope?

I teach a five-step system called the Life Balance Advantage, rooted in decades of therapeutic and wellness experience. Here’s how it works:

  1. Be Energized – Nourish your body through proper nutrition, restful sleep, and physical activity. Did you know this alone can reduce worry by 20%?
  2. Be Clear – Monitor your thoughts. Are they creating sickness or health? Clarity in thought leads to clarity in life.
  3. Be Centered – Understand and express your emotions. Meditation can significantly increase your happiness.
  4. Be Connected – Evaluate your relationships. Toxic connections can damage your health, while nurturing ones support it.
  5. Be Aligned – Live in harmony with your life purpose. Happiness isn’t a mystery—it’s a choice and a byproduct of purpose.

Life Balance Analysis: Where Are You Losing Energy?

Many clients ask: “Where do I begin?” I always recommend starting with a Life Balance Analysis across five core domains:

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Mental
  • Interpersonal
  • Spiritual

This simple true/false exercise reveals where you’re losing energy and where you’re already strong. It provides a starting point for action.


From Knowing to Doing: The Final Step

Awareness without action is like reading a map and never taking a step. Once you know what’s out of balance, you must begin to make shifts, even small ones, in your daily life.

Start with a “what if” mindset:

  • What if I spoke to myself with kindness?
  • What if I nurtured my relationships?
  • What if I lived in sync with my purpose?

The answers to these questions can change everything.

You deserve happiness. You deserve balance. You deserve to feel blessed.
